These types of gloss meters use a halogen lamp or an LED light as their light source. There is no prism, and the light bounces off the surface directly into the sensor. When all of the measurement surface for a particular meter has been measured, it will tell you how much light was reflected back to the sensor and divide it by how much was projected onto the surface in order to determine a ratio. This ratio is then used to establish a gloss level.

The probe for the incident light source meters is small and usually just screws into place like a camera lens, while the reflected light source types have larger cases in which you place the probe tip, which is usually a metal ball.
