James H. Morrison, CM, Ph. D. (Ibadan),B.A. (Acadia),B.Ed. (Acadia).
Born in Nova Scotia, Morrison completed his Doctorate at University of Ibadan in 1976. Returning to Canada he served as Research Historian in the Canadian Government and in 1979 became Executive Director of the International Education Centre at Saint Mary's University, Halifax, Nova Scotia. He has spent 30+ years at Saint Mary's serving in a number of administrative positions-Dean of Arts, Dean of Continuing Education, Chair of Asian Studies, as well as International Development Studies. He has published widely in the areas of African History, Asian History, and Canadian Ethnic and Immigration History. He has been widely recognized for his expertise in Oral History and Oral Tradition and published and taught university courses on the value and methodology of oral narratives. He has held Senior Visiting fellowships in Japan, Singapore and India. In 2009, he was awarded the Order of Canada Canada's highest civilian award by the Canadian Government and in 2013 received the Queen Elizabeth's 60th Jubilee medal. Both awards were in recognition of his work in oral and local history. He was honoured with the Queen Elizabeth Platinum Jubilee medal in 2022 for his contribution to local history and museums in Nova Scotia. Morrison was named Professor Emeritus in 2017 and still remains an active scholar in the History Department at Saint Mary's University.
