I started this portfolio during a summer course. I had never taken any type of professional writing class before. In the beginning, I didn't think that I was going to have a hard time, but I found myself challenged more than I ever thought I could have been. I enjoyed all the assignments of this course because they gave me an opportunity to practice writing business documents. Through my time in school and college I had never been asked to write a memo or analyze a cover letter. I might have written 1 cover letter, but it wasn't after learning what a cover letter is supposed to be. I enjoyed the pacing of this summer course and would have also loved to have taken it during a normal semester time frame. I also liked the opportunity to revise work and the peer feedback actives.
My portfolio starts off with my resume and cover letter for a job of my choosing. During the writing of these two documents, I thought I had a strong understanding of formatting and general language, but once I came back to revise the documents, I realize the short cuts I took while writing both assignments. I took the feedback as an opportunity to come out of this with a finished product and write something I can be proud of. Another great factor of revising these documents is now I have a resume and cover letter for any job I'm looking to apply for. The Report was the hardest of all the assignments to write because it needed most information. It was hard being unbiased and finding resources. The revision prosses was also harder than any of my other revisions because once I changed something I had to go back through and change it again. The presentation was something I was familiar with and just had fun with the assignment. This assignment allowed me to be creative and talk. I love talking about expressing myself.
Before this portfolio, I didn't know how to write a memo, cover letter, report, or analyze professional writing. I have only taken classes that talked about grammar and entertainment writing. I grew as a writing by enhancing my abilities in the business world. These newfound skills can help me gain more jobs and help with getting myself off my feed as an author. I also didn't know how to create a website before this class and now I have my own portfolio website to show companies that I'm a candidate. I believe that this website shows my true abilities and how far I have come on my journey as a writer.
