Tessellations
Tessellations
A tessellation is a covering of a flat surface with closed figures, shapes, so that there are no overlaps or empty spaces.
A tessellation is polygonal if the shapes are polygons. A polygonal tessellation is side-by-side if all polygons that are adjacent share a full side.
A tessellation that uses only one type of shape is said to be monohedral.
Periodic tessellations
A tessellation is periodic when it can be constructed by translations in two different directions of a set formed by one or more adjacent shapes, called the repeat unit.
a) Polygonal side-by-side monohedral periodic tessellation; b) Repeat unit
Tessellations with stars and rosettes
In many side-by-side polygonal monohedral periodic tessellations that have geometric ornamentation in the style of Islamic art, the repeat unit is centrally decorated with regular stars or rosettes.
a) Polygonal side-by-side monohedral periodic tessellation ornamented with rosettes; b) Repeat unit decorated with a rosette
Coloring of a tessellation
The use of color significantly enriches the design.
