Room RDC 11: Katy Kelly: "Developing reading joy in YLs" (PRIM, READ)
The aim of this talk is for participants to examine and re-evaluate how reading tasks are framed in the Young Learner second language classroom. Together we will explore the common challenges when 'teaching' reading faced by teachers and young learners. The talk will propose that too much emphasis is placed on comprehension, with binary task types resulting in a prevailing sense of 'right and wrong' and not enough focus is placed on content exploration. By looking at practical activities and tasks, it is hoped participants will consider shifting their practice to include more meaningful content engagement and facilitate the joy of reading in their Young Learner classes. This shift in approach may negate some of the common difficulties with reading development, as well as create a life-long sense of literacy positivity.
