It was bound to happen. There have comments on my previous posts that have said "yay! Someone's carrying on Aok's legacy". Well, I saw that and went "hey, I should do my next post about the Amulet of Kings." So here we are.
As always, I hope you enjoy. I spend a long time thinking about these and reading the pages. I study the page that I'm going to do during lunch at school, so I don't really talk to people when doing that (not that I have a lot of people to talk to, my friends are still salty about the bouncy ball incident, lol). This week I don't have homework to do, so I'll go into a lot more detail than last week.
So to begin, the Amulet of Kings was also known as Amulet of Kings of Glory. They can be used interchangeably, but referring to it as the Amulet of Kings is far more common.
The Amulet of Kings was worn by the emperors in Cyrodil. There are two things special about the Cyrodilic Emperors were that they were ancestors of Alessia, and that they all had the blood of the dragon. If someone that wasn't a descendant of Alessia, it would slip off of their neck, as shown in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.
The icon/symbol of the Septim Empire was the Red Diamond, which was derived from the Amulet of Kings.
It is unknown the origin of the Amulet, but there are many theories of where it came from. One of the theories is that the Amulet is crystallized blood of Lorkhan after his battle with Akatosh and Trinimac. Another theory is that Akatosh made the gem from his blood and gave it to Alessia to show he wanted to keep the mortals safe from daedra. The final theory is that it's just a soul gem and an Ayleid artifact.
During the Oblivion crisis in the late Third Era, the Amulet of Kings played an important role in ending it. The Hero of Kvatch gave the Amulet of Kings to Martin Septim, after the assassination of his father, Uriel Septim VII. When Martin had the Amulet, he became the physical form of Akatosh and fought Mehrunes Dagon. The Amulet of Kings was destroyed in the process, but it saved the Imperial City, and probably Tamriel. Mehrunes Dagon after that, is incapable of coming to Mundus, which is the plane of existence that Nirn is in.
The creation of the Amulet, I have already gotten into, but repetition is key to remember. When Akatosh and Trinimac slayed Lorkhan, his heart flew across Tamriel. His blood also went across the the continent. The blood crystallized and the Amulet was formed. Another theory is that it was Akatosh's blood that was given to Alessia as a covenant that as long as her descendants are true to Dragon Blood, that Dragonfires would burn and Tamriel would be safe from the Daedra.
After many centuries, Tiber Septim fought off the Nordic and Breton armies at Sancre Tor. Sound familiar? Anyway, Talos recovered the Amulet from Remen III's tomb. The Amulet was later passed on to Tiber Septim's decedents.
The destruction of the Amulet happened during the Oblivion Crisis. If you don't know what that is GO PLAY OBLIVION!!! Uriel Septim VII was assassinated by the Mythic Dawn, which was an cult that worshiped Mehrunes Dagon. The Hero of Kvatch was there at the time of the assassination along with a few members of the Blades. Uriel Septim gave the Amulet to the Hero and told him to give it to Jauffre, the leader of the Blades. He was a monk living at Weynon Priory, and he had to keep the Amulet hidden until Martin got to him. The Hero went and got the Amulet back from the Mythic Dawn, and succeeded. The Amulet was then given to Martin, and he went to the Imperial City. Mehrunes Dagon attacked at that time. Martin crushed the amulet to become Akatosh to defeat Dagon. The Amulet was destroyed in the process, and it's probably scattered through the statue of Akatosh (If you've read Aok's bio you'll get it).
So yeah, that concludes my third lore post. Something that I found very interesting, is that all of my posts so far have been connected. The Heart of Lorkhan was in my first post about the Battle of Red Mountain. Last week's was about Tiber Septim/Talos. They were both combined in this one and I thought that was super cool.
