Class of 2025
Inspired by a childhood interest in paleontology, my series explores what would happen if extinct birds were to come back to life. I depict the consequences of the avians’ return through their relationships with still-living creatures, their environment, and the circumstances surrounding their extinction.
I started the series by depicting literal aspects of the birds in life, such as referencing modern descendants or past consumption by humans (Family Reunion and Dodo for Dinner). As the series progressed, speculation led into exploring re-extinction (Deathly diving and Feline Flyby) and poor fit in modern environments (Frosted Feathers and No New Niche). While realism remains constant, materials shifted to coincide with the change in ideas: with ink and charcoal for macabre subjects (Frosted Feathers and Feline Flyby) and vibrant watercolors for a lighthearted tone (Second Chance). Second Chance leaves the series with a hopeful note by depicting conservation as an effort to take advantage of a second chance at saving the birds.
