This lesson aims to teach what value is and how it affects the way colors look. They will understand the difference between a hue and the different colors you can create from that hue by changing its value. Students will learn how to mix tints, tones, and shades and how these value changes can make an object look three dimensional. They will also see how artists use value to create mood, focus, and contrast in art. This helps students understand color in a deeper way and gives them skills they can apply to their own artwork.

Students will learn how to interpret lyrics to create a visual representation of their chosen song. They will plan their designs through sketching, labeling layers, and organizing visual elements before cutting. Because this project is labor intensive and requires more attention to detail, students will learn to persevere through complex, time consuming steps to achieve a more high quality finished project. They will select different symbols and colors to convey the theme and emotion of the song, as well as learn how to use color and shape to represent complex emotional narratives, such as using black or grey to convey sadness. Students will learn how to break a scene into at least six distinct layers. They will have to choose the colors of each layer using color theory to create a sense of depth and understanding of how color affects the representation of their song. They will manipulate value and texture using colored pencils. They will develop skills using X-acto knives, learning how to cut intricate, precise details in railboard while maintaining a 1 inch border for frame structure. Students will learn to use spacers, such as cardboard, to separate layers, creating a 3D effect, and to ensure the art work is safely assembled with a frame stand. At the end of the project we would have a critique where students would describe why the song was chosen and how their visual choices represent their song.
