Currently, we observe public and private efforts to create platforms in the health sector to generate and gain control over health data. The availability of health data, combined with the use of Artificial Intelligence, is key to innovation in the sector, and contributes to the development of precision medicine. The aim of this project is to investigate data collection, ownership and sharing in the health sector, and study the optimal design and regulation of platforms connecting patients and healthcare providers. The main novelty is to consider the peculiarity of the health sector, both in terms of the sensitivity of the data treated and of the existing regulations. In particular, we plan to investigate how price regulation of medical services and intellectual property rights may interact with new rules on data-related platform strategies. Also, we intend to study the interplay between different regulations (e.g., intellectual property rights, privacy policy, competition policy) that affect both traditional players (e.g., pharmaceutical firms) and new players (e.g., data pooling platforms).
