OVERVIEW: A modern, college-age reflection on the cult classic ‘Heathers’, taking influence from both the movie and the musical with the intent of examining trauma, societal expectations, and mental health matters.
For as long as she could remember, Veronica Sawyer was a wallflower - unnoticed, untouched by the cliques that slowly formed throughout middle school and high school. Only when she was found in the halls with the three most popular girls- The Heathers- did fate alter its path.
In a hurried attempt to gain their favor, Veronica scribbled out a hall pass for the four of them; in return, she requested a single thing: their attention for one lunch period, an attempt to gain popularity, herself. It didn’t matter if the attention didn’t last, she merely longed for a taste.
In a strange turn of events, however, the Heathers took a quick liking to Veronica and her useful ability to forge nearly anything, and she was embraced by the popular girls for the rest of her Junior and Senior years. When it came time to choose what school she wished to attend for post-secondary, Veronica was heavily influenced by her ‘friends’ - and in the end, the four of them would apply, and be accepted into, a prestigious University well known for its fraternities and sororities. Together, they would work through their undergraduates in a variety of degrees, with Veronica pursuing Open Studies for the majority of two years, until, in their third year, Heather Chandler killed herself.
Everything seemed to come to a halt then - while classes resumed, those that Veronica surrounded herself with were morose; lost without a figurehead to their popularity. Slowly, she began to distance herself from the various groups in which she had been involved. First was the Student Union, then the cheerleaders, and finally, the remaining Heathers. The chaos of the world fell down upon her shoulders, and Veronica held no ability to resist it. And so she crumbled.
Her return home was meant to be no more than a vacation, extended to permanence by her parents when they discovered the half-written suicide note in Veronica’s things. A psychiatrist was contacted, and Veronica dropped out, leaving the carefully-forged life with the Heathers behind.
Alone once more, Veronica began to fall apart. Even with her parents’ well-intentioned support, her father remained aloof and foolish, while her mother’s focus remained on material things; a show of their dwindling middle class wealth. Where she searched for pieces of herself to put back together, she could find only the Heathers and the mask she had worn throughout the end of her school career. Among the memories, few were positive, and many more damned the person she had once been, leaving her more and more confused.
