OVERVIEW: A modern, college-age reflection on the cult classic ‘Heathers’, taking influence from both the movie and the musical with the intent of examining trauma, societal expectations, and mental health matters.
Life was rarely easy for Jason Donovan- between his mother’s ‘accident’ and his father’s inability to parent even himself, the boy was left to fend for himself throughout much of middle and high school. He did not mind his status as outcast, and Jason never stuck around schools long enough for anyone to pick up on his troubled nature.
Sometimes, however, it seemed as though his father noticed the signs that teachers were getting close to the truth - Jason was certain, the morning they left his last high school, that the sound of sirens followed them out of the city. There were no more schools after that. From the ages of 16 to 18, he worked for his father, a demolition assistant, ‘earning his keep’ within the household. The moment he was able, however, Jason slipped out from beneath his father’s thumb, fleeing to a town in the middle of nowhere: Sherwood, Ohio.
Here, he began working as a cashier at a small 7-Eleven; it didn’t make much, but it was just enough to pay the bills, and that was good enough for him. He dealt with the ridicule of the high schoolers; the scorn of the college students for one they deemed to be less than them. It wasn’t quite a life, but it was something Jason knew better: survival.

Jason Donovan has known he’s special since middle school, when his father laid hands on him and Jason. burned the shit out of his arms.
Ever since then, Big Bud Dean has done his best to avoid taking his rage out on his son. He’s even gone so far as to enter Jason into an art-focused school in the hopes it might channel his ‘creativity’ elsewhere.
A camp counselor from Shadyside, Jason Dean is best described as ‘the odd one out’. Why he was chosen as a counselor is a complete mystery, but regardless, JD seems to get along with the kids, particularly the outcasts.
