Nyx

Born in the 1600s into a coven in New England, the child known as Elizabeth Marie Williams was always aware of their differences when compared to the nearby village’s children. Even beyond their own supernatural abilities, they felt no connection with her given name or fully with the gender they were assigned at birth. Knowing that their parents had chosen new names for themselves long ago, they chose to do the same, and were henceforth known as Nyx. 

While the coven remained secluded from the nearby villages of humans, Nyx often ventured out, making friends wherever he went and leaving a trail of chaos behind when confronted by those who disapproved of her mysterious and mischievous nature. 

It was inevitable that they would find someone with whom they felt attached, frequently leaving their coven behind to sneak away into the woods and meet their beloved. Nyx and Anna remained close as they grew, and Nyx truly believed that they might be together for the rest of their lives - until the witch hunts began. 

Ironically enough, it was not members of the coven who were targeted, but humans. Few actual witches burned, but when young women were gradually finding themselves accused, it was only a matter of time before Anna was targeted… 

And so she was, unbeknownst to Nyx, who had thrown themselves into their studies, preparing to confess their nature to their beloved. They learned of the ‘trial’ the same morning it was being held and, desperate to save Anna, turned from witchcraft to something far more dangerous: demonic bargains. 

One specific ritual Nyx had learned of caught her attention early on in her studies- one which bestowed powers beyond belief to whoever dared summon the demon responsible for giving such ‘gifts’. Many of the abilities she’d learned would come from such a deal were far more difficult for witches to perform on their own, demanding a high price, and in a desperate attempt to save Anna, Nyx summoned the demon and offered her own witchcraft and soul in exchange for the Gift of Shadows. 

No longer human, Nyx wasted no time in stepping through the shadows of the oaks which surrounded them to the bottom of the lake, traversing a shadow dimension they would later refer to as ‘Hades’. But they were too late. 

In the centuries since, Nyx has learned much about their own abilities and the lack of humanity that has come as a result. Their physical form is such only in direct sunlight, and Nyx has control over their appearance, so long as they appear as some version of themselves.

In modern times, they act as a private investigator under the alias of Eli Williams, going places where most cannot with ease.
