Surfing is a fun and challenging sports hobby because we ride the waves using a special board. However, behind it all, there is a long history of why surfing is called one of the deadliest hobbies in the world. Surfing is believed to have started thousands of years ago in the Polynesian Islands. Polynesians were very skilled sailors. Experienced Polynesian sailors even used surfing techniques during the war to reach shore quickly. In the 18th century, British ship captain James Cook arrived in the Hawaiian Islands and saw local residents playing in the waves using large wooden planks. James Cook called this sport 'surfing', which eventually became popular throughout the world. However, when Spain and the United States took control of the Hawaiian islands in the 19th century, the practice of surfing almost disappeared. They view it as a primitive and careless habit because there are many children whose lives are threatened because of surfing. For decades, traditional surfing practices persisted only among native Polynesians far from Western cultural influences. And everything changed when an American traveler named Duke Kahanamoku popularized surfing in the early 20th century, specifically in the 1920s. Duke Kahanamoku is a talented water polo athlete. Through his hard work, Duke Kahanamoku introduced surfing to the world at large and helped the transition from traditional wooden boards to lighter and more efficient plastic fiberboards. Over the next few decades, people from all over the world flocked to beaches with the aim of conquering the waves. During this period, surfing technology continued to develop with the introduction of new boards equipped with special abilities, such as the ability to turn and jump. However, even though it has developed a lot, surfing is still considered one of the deadliest hobbies in the world. Large and strong waves can be very dangerous, especially for someone who does not have sufficient knowledge and skills about surfing. They can easily drown and be lost in the ocean waves. Apart from that, many serious accidents often occur while surfing, resulting in victims being seriously injured and eventually dying. Surfing can also trigger other risks such as shark attacks and this has become one of the main concerns for surfers around the world. What's more, climate change has dramatically affected waves and ocean conditions, which can also increase the risks when surfing at the beach.
