Please note: This document reflects the changes made in 2005 recommendations for Indic-script OpenType font and shaping-engine implementations. While Indic fonts made according to the earlier recommendations will still function properly in the new versions of Uniscribe, font developers may choose to update their fonts, particularly if they wish to avoid certain limitations of the earlier implementation.

This document presents information that will help font developers create or support OpenType fonts for the Telugu script covered by the Unicode Standard. The Telugu script is used to write the Telugu language of Andhra Pradesh, India, as well as the minority languages Gondi and Lambadi.

This document targets developers implementing Indic shaping behavior compatible with Microsoft OpenType specification for Indic scripts. It contains information about terminology, font features and behavior of the Indic shaping engine in regards to the Telugu script. While it does not contain instructions for creating Telugu fonts, it will help font developers understand how the Indic shaping engine processes Indic text. In addition, registered features of the Telugu script are defined and illustrated with examples.

The OpenType lookups in an Indic font must be written to match glyph sequences after re-ordering has occurred. OpenType fonts should not have substitutions that attempt to perform the re-ordering. If a font developer attempted to encode such reordering information in an OpenType font, they would need to add a huge number of many-to-many glyph mappings to cover the general algorithms that a shaping engine will use.

The order of the lookups within each feature is also very important. For more information on lookups and defining features in OpenType fonts, see the Encoding section of the OpenType Font Development document.

NOTE: It is strongly recommended to include the "dflt" language tag in all OpenType fonts because it defines the basic script handling for a font. The "dflt" language system is used as the default if no other language specific features are defined, or if the application does not support that particular language. If the "dflt" tag is not present for the script being used, the font may not work in some applications.

I change the font for Global Style and enforced this global style for all source types by using Enable Global Font option. Use an unicode font with Telugu support. You can use Noto Sans Telugu, but in my system that made the English text unreadable. So, I used Giduga font, which can display both English and Telugu scripts. You can download the fonts from this site (It's the first link)

Thanks for the feedback. I am trying to get better at testing fonts in different languages.

I did some more testing and confirmed that the OpenType designer in FontCreator is not a good choice for testing.

That kinda surprised me.

LibreOffice (LO) seems to be a better font/language testing tool.

Both the Dhurjati font and Nirmala UI fonts did work properly in LO.

The test text from above looked correct.

Surprisingly Arial Unicode MS did not look right.

The font issues are still not resolved. Gimp and PS handle Indic fonts better. Affinity's challenge is making our work too difficult. The language here is Telugu

I am trying to add Telugu font to photoshop but it keeps displaying it with matras separated. I tried changing the text engine and changing the language to Telugu in the character window and selecting various Telugu fonts and the issue pertains. Please see how the text appears in the layer preview (appears correct) vs actual image. Thank you for your help.

If you have set the text engine to word ready and set the language with proper font it should work fine. What is your version of PS. I tested by copying over a telugu text from web and pasted it in PS and i see correct results(visually, don't know to read and write), you can confirm by looking at the following. My PS version is 21.1.3 on a MAC

SUCH TEXT ENGINE PREFERNCES ARE NOT AVAILABLE IN VEGAS PRO. WHEN I SEARCHED IN YOUTUBE FOR TUTORIALS, I SEE EVERYONE IS TALKING ABOUT "how to add custom fonts to Vegas Pro, directing to Da Fonts, Da Vinci Fonts etc., for English fonts.

I already tried Google translator from English to Telugu. But when typed in Vegas Pro Titles & Text, Legacy Text, or pasted the Telugu version from Google translator into the typing area and selecting the right telugu font downloaded and installed in fonts folder of my computer's 'c", the words typed with one space gap or thrown to many spaces gap and also letter's edges are broken away in preview window of my Vegas Pro 17. But all titles are super fine in all Adobe Softwares without using Google translator and directly typing selecting Telugu fonts installed, in the same PC. Not able to understand the reason why Vegas Pro 17 is not able to do that. May be if Magix adds text-engine-preferences as I discussed in earlier message, this problem may be solved forever. Please advice whether I am not doing any settings in Vegas Pro 17.

My personal feeling is that a missing regional font is not a condemnation of the whole software, nor does it constitute a notion of bias. There are many fonts not included in Vegas; your Adobe fonts may be among them.

Probably the font data contains two letters but VP only showing the first one but I don't know the detail. I remember someone also take note of other Asian fonts which is not correctly shown, probably Korean letters but I agree if this has to be fixed. I'll forward to developers.

Thanks a lot brother you have understood my difficulty completely as if you are my own native person. I tried that also, turning on Legacy Text with the help of Deprecated features, still the same problem exists. Thanks for taking the issue with the developers. I think by the time of release of Vegas Pro 19, this may be solved by the developers with your initiation. Then I can purchase Vegas Pro 19. Thankyou once again for understanding my problem completely. God bless you. I tried the same fonts that you checked (Dhurjati, Srikrushnadevaraya) and attaching here how they look in the Legacy writing window and preview window.

nirbhayam When I typed this word 'nirbhayam' many telugu words appeard in which the first one is correct as it appears in the LEGACY writing page. ie.,  . But when I tried to select it with the snipping tool, this is disappearing so, I took a photo from cellphone and attaching.

The fonts recommended on this page have been tested for functionality on PCs running Windows XP/2000/2003/NT. They are unsuitable for use with Macintosh computers, because they make use of OpenType technology, developed jointly by Microsoft and Adobe, for displaying vowel signs (matras) and ligatures appropriately. While OS X also recognizes OpenType layout tables, it uses a different rendering engine (ATSUI), and these fonts are written for Microsoft's engine (called Uniscribe).

The content and design of this page rely largely Alan Wood's Unicode Fonts and WAZU JAPAN's Gallery of Unicode Fonts; these sites are excellent and up-to-date resources to find fonts, text editors, browsers, and other Unicode resources. Serif fonts - these are fonts that have these little lines or "feet" at the end of the letters. They're fancy and often used in printed books and newspapers. Examples of serif fonts include Times New Roman, Georgia and Courier. 2351a5e196
