Q: What is a pup / puppy?

A: A pup, or puppy, is a member of the pup play community who acts like a dog in a regressed headspace, both NSFW, SFW, or a mix of both. They may have gear, such as pup hoods, paws, collars, leashes, etc, and props, such as kennels, toys, treats, and more. The person may bark, yip, growl, and whine like a dog, or they may talk normally, be completely silent, or have a mix of any of these depending on the setting and individual. Puppies are typically in a regressed mindset, which can help with trauma and comfort. Pups often are submissive, but not always. 

Q: What is a Master / Owner / Handler?

A: A pup will oftentimes have a more dominant and possessive person to guide them, known as a master, handler, trainer, or owner. They act as the pup's owner, helping keep gear in place, keep the pup in their relaxed headspace, keep the pup safe, and overall aids in guiding, protecting, and handling the pup, or sometimes, pups. Handlers won't always have gear like the puppies do, instead they can be identified by spacial awareness (physically near the pup), holding a leash, directing the pup, or by talking to the handler (self identified). The handlers are often tasked with positive and negative reinforcement, or training, keeping their pup in line and well behaved. 

I use more masculine presenting names (Master vs Mistress) as this is a personal page and I have a Master. Substitute the name you call your Dom for any of the above. 

Q: What is a "scene"?

A: A scene is a planned encounter, activity, or sequence between a consenting pup and consenting participate(s), such as their owner, Master, or handler. They can be SFW or NSFW, and are typically planned out ahead of time, but feature improv. They feature props, clothing, and human participates (no actual animals). Pup play examples may be a bath for the puppy, a faux vet visit, or a training session. They oftentimes use BDSM, such as restraints, punishment, correction, and other kinky aspects that are determined and consented to, by the pup, but especially enforced the Master. 

Q: What does SFW and NSFW mean?

A: SFW stands for "Safe for Work" and NSFW means "Not safe for work". Both are common slang terms on the internet meaning something is safe for work, or safe to view while you're at work, school, etc, meaning non-sexual, non-graphic, or non offending media, including photos or videos. NSFW means that it should not be viewed in public, including graphic, sexual, pornographic, or explicit media. In this website, I mean SFW as non-sexual (but possibly suggestive) media, and NSFW as sexual, pornographic, or nude media. 

Q: What is a "pup hood"?

A: A pup hood is the name of the mask, facial covering, or costume head a pup player wears on their head. They are called a 'hood' as its similar to an identity that the person puts on to 'mask' their human appearance and get into the puppy mindset. Some pups have only one, others have multiple. Some pups with multiple hoods have different names and personalities for each, or one for all. A hood does not make you a pup, just as a fursuit doesn't make you a furry. You can be a pup without having any gear, but for many it can help the puppy to get into the mindset as well as visually looks like a dog. 

Q: Do you actually think you're a dog?!

A: No, we don't identify and believe we are an animal or a dog. We identify with the playful and relaxed mindset of a puppy, but we do not believe that we are actually one. We roleplay as a pet, and enjoy the submissive part of being owned and possessed by somebody. Some of us also may just like pup play for the aesthetic. For many it's a kink, fetish, mindset, or roleplay, but not a full belief that we are an animal or an animal trapped in a human body. Therians are that, and I recommend you look into them further, as they define themselves as an animal trapped in a human body. 

Q: Is pup play a furry thing?!

A: Short answer, no. 

Long answer, they are two queer and safe communities that promote kink, consent, and self expression. Furries are people who enjoy anthropomorphic animal characters, and enjoy art, fursuits, and anthro media. Pup play, however, is a SFW headspace and/or a pet play oriented kink/fetish that focuses on the aesthetic and general personality of dogs. The two are often found interlapping, as a pup is basically an anthro dog in a way, and many pups are furries, including myself. However, most furries are pups and not all pups are furries. In 18+ sections of furry conventions you'll often find pups, similar to how you'll find fursuits and furries at kink friendly, pup friendly, and queer spaces, events, and bars. 

Q: Do you f*ck dogs? 

A: No, never. Pup play is essentially a headspace and aesthetic, not bestiality. Pups do not want to have sexual intercourse with dogs, or any animal, nor does the master/handler. Pup play is a form of pet play, and pet play is NOT bestiality, just a kink.

Q: What got you interested in pup play?

A: I'm not going to lie, I used to hate pup play. I didn't understand it, and that unknowing led me to dislike for it. 

Once I got into the relationship with my Master I'm in now, I rediscovered pup play and loved the regressed mindset, aesthetic, and kink involved in it. Despite being a vers/switch, I loved the submissive side that came out in me in sexual settings, and loved being a puppy. At this point, I am mostly referred to as "pup" "puppy" or "ruppy" instead of my government name I have trauma with and never really liked, and, god, I LOVE it. I love wearing a collar, being owned, and being just a dumb dog all the time.
