If you want a factory-quality, plug-and-play wiring solution specifically for 2013-2014 RAM trucks that protects your vehicle's electrical system from damage, choose Tekonsha 3023-P; if you need a direct replacement switch to fix brake failure or warning light issues on older GM and Cadillac SUVs and pickups, choose SMTRUILAN Trailer Brake Control.
These two products sit at opposite ends of the trailer towing ecosystem. One is a specialized interface harness designed to make installing a controller safe and clean in a specific generation of Ram trucks, while the other is a mechanical switch replacement intended to restore function to a braking circuit in a wide array of General Motors vehicles. The choice between them isn't about which brand is more famous or which one costs less; it is entirely dictated by what vehicle you are driving and what part of the braking system is actually broken or needs upgrading. You are not choosing between two identical controllers. You are choosing between a custom adapter for a modern truck and a generic repair part for an older fleet vehicle. This distinction is critical because using the wrong component will result in zero functionality and potentially unsafe towing conditions.
• Tekonsha 3023-P: Its biggest strength is the braided mesh protection and Plug & Play design that requires no cutting or splicing, making it ideal for preserving a factory look. Its trade-off is extreme specificity, as it only fits 2013-2014 RAM 1500, 2500, and 3500 models.
• SMTRUILAN Trailer Brake Control: Its biggest strength is its broad compatibility with a massive range of GM, GMC, and Cadillac models from 2007 to 2014, serving as a direct OEM replacement. Its trade-off is that it is a single switch component rather than a full wiring kit, meaning it solves a specific failure point but doesn't add new connectivity features.
• Who this is for: The Tekonsha unit is for the Ram owner who just bought a brake controller and wants a professional installation without damaging their vehicle's wires. The SMTRUILAN unit is for the Chevy, GMC, or Cadillac owner whose original brake control switch has failed and is triggering warning lights.
The Tekonsha 3023-P is not a standalone device you can buy off the shelf and expect to work on any truck. It is a dedicated wiring adapter designed for a very narrow slice of the automotive market: the 2013 through 2014 RAM 1500, 2500, and 3500. If you own one of these specific trucks and plan to tow a trailer equipped with electric brakes, this harness is the bridge between your vehicle's electrical system and a compatible Tekonsha brake controller. The primary value here is safety and aesthetics. Unlike generic wiring kits that require you to cut into your vehicle's existing loom, solder connections, and wrap everything in electrical tape, this unit utilizes a Plug & Play port. You simply follow the included instructions to connect the harness directly to the vehicle's pre-wired connector and then plug your brake controller into the harness. This eliminates the risk of poor connections, shorts, or exposed copper that could lead to electrical fires or erratic braking behavior.
Durability is another major factor for anyone towing heavy loads over long distances. This isn't just cosmetic; it serves a functional purpose by protecting the wires from nicks, punctures, and elevated temperatures that can occur under the hood or along the frame rail. For a driver who spends time on the road, perhaps doing routine maintenance like oil changes where they might accidentally snag a loose wire, this extra layer of armor is significant. It ensures that the connection remains solid even when the vehicle vibrates or encounters rough terrain. The silver finish further suggests a design intent to blend in with the vehicle's undercarriage components, maintaining the "factory-installed" look that many truck enthusiasts prioritize.

You should definitely buy the Tekonsha 3023-P if you drive a 2013-2014 RAM and have purchased a proportional or time-based Tekonsha brake controller that lacks a vehicle-specific connector. It is also the right choice if you are uncomfortable working with automotive electronics and want to avoid the mess of splicing wires. However, you must skip this product if your vehicle is anything other than those specific RAM years. It will not fit a Ford, a Chevy, or a newer model Ram. Furthermore, if you already have a fully wired setup and just need a replacement switch rather than a new connection point, this harness is unnecessary complexity. It is a precision tool for a specific job, not a universal fix-all.
The SMTRUILAN Trailer Brake Control operates in a completely different category. This is a replacement switch, identified by its ability to replace OEM part numbers 15823719 and 15926102. It is engineered to solve a very specific problem: a failed brake control switch that causes brake failure warnings or leaves the trailer braking system dead. While the Tekonsha product helps you install a new system, this SMTRUILAN part is designed to bring an old system back to life. Its primary audience is owners of General Motors vehicles produced between 2007 and 2014. The compatibility list is extensive, covering the Chevy Silverado (1500, 2500HD, 3500HD), Tahoe, Suburban, Avalanche, GMC Sierra, Yukon, and various Cadillac Escalade models (including ESV and EXT). If your truck is in this lineup and the button or switch controlling the trailer brakes is stuck, unresponsive, or causing dashboard alerts, this unit is the direct fix.
Construction quality is a central selling point for this component. The product information specifies that the switch is made from high-quality ABS material. In the context of automotive switches, ABS is known for being wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant. A trailer brake switch sits in a high-vibration environment and is subjected to temperature fluctuations, so durability matters. The claim that it can help solve problems such as brake failure and warning lights suggests that this part restores the electrical continuity required for the vehicle's computer to engage the trailer brakes properly. It is a straightforward swap: remove the faulty OEM switch, insert this SMTRUILAN unit, and verify that the warning light goes out and the brakes respond to the pedal input.
This product is for the mechanic or DIYer who knows their vehicle's electrical system has a specific fault in the control module. It is not a universal upgrade; it is a targeted repair. If you have a 2012 Chevy Silverado and your trailer brakes stopped working after the switch started acting up, this is the part you need. Conversely, if you have a 2015 vehicle or a non-GM truck, this part is useless. Similarly, if you are trying to install a new brake controller in a truck that doesn't have one yet, this switch alone won't get the job done—you would likely need the full harness and controller assembly. It is strictly a replacement component for an existing, but broken, system.

The braided mesh protection and the guarantee of a no-splice installation give me peace of mind that the electrical system won't degrade over time, which is crucial when hauling heavy loads. On the other hand, I would pick the SMTRUILAN Trailer Brake Control if I owned a 2007-2014 Chevy or GMC with a faulty switch. It is the most logical, direct solution to get my brakes working again without replacing the entire dashboard assembly. Ultimately, the decision comes down to whether you are building a system or fixing one. For those performing routine maintenance tasks like an oil change where you might inspect the wiring, the Tekonsha's robust protection is the superior choice for long-term reliability, provided your truck matches the year and model requirements.
It does not fit earlier or later generations.
No, this is a replacement switch for an existing system. If you need to add a controller to a truck that never had one, you would need a complete wiring harness and controller unit, not just this switch.
According to the product details, the Plug & Play design requires no cutting, splicing, or taping. You only need to follow the vehicle-specific instructions included with the package.
The switch is constructed from high-quality ABS material, which is noted for being wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant to handle tough conditions.
