This assignment focuses your attention on your own social media usage and how it impacts society. To do this we looked over articles in the Pew Research Center and took a social media addiction quiz. Our task is to pull all our information together and form our own opinion on how social media impacts society.
Result: You’re FAIRLY RELIANT on social media
Reflection: I agree with my survey results. I use social media for everything, entertainment, news, shopping, I have even replaced google with it. Social media fulfills all other forms of entertainment, so when I am not busy, I am using some form of social media.
"Far fewer teens say they use Facebook on a daily basis (19%), with only 3% saying they are on the site almost constantly" (Anderson) this is interesting to me because I personally use Facebook every day for multiple purposes. Seeing that only 19% of teens use Facebook every day is shocking and makes me feel stuck in the past.
Over time social media has grown drastically and has had both positive and negative effects on society. I think social media's greatest advantage so far has been the global interaction it provides us with. Social media being so worldwide helps spread awareness about prominent issues, provides new opportunities for businesses, keeps loved ones in contact, and much more. The biggest disadvantages of social media are the misuse of it (cyberbullying, scamming, or spreading misinformation) and its way of disconnecting people from life. The misuse of social media can really take a toll on a person's mental health and so cannot get enough in-person socialization. The right amount of social media and proper use is good for the world we live in now; a lot of things would be different without it.
After completing this module, I am inspired to take a step back from social media and see how different my life would feel and how much my everyday schedule would change. I have learned more about the pros and cons of social media usage and why it should be monitored.
