Overview:
I am interested in exploring how the nature of technology influences entrepreneurial action and innovation. For this, I have been studying how entrepreneurs develop new ventures around emerging technologies and how their ventures emerge (across time and market applications). I am also interested in how established organizations respond to emerging technologies and in particular how they collaborate with startups to develop innovative products, services, new business models, or other innovation outcomes.
My ongoing work touches on three parts of this broad phenomenon:
1) Explaining the distinct paths that entrepreneurs take to explore emerging technologies into new ventures, and studying how these disconnected actions can result (or not) in a new industry (with or without the participation of established firms)
2) Understanding how scientists consider applications for new science & technology developments. Aiming to uncover how biases and perceptions shape innovation direction, and what can be done to increase the societal impact of scientific research.
3) Studying how existing technologies can find new applications, exploring the phenomenon of technology exaptation and how it can contribute to finding solutions to new problems with existing solutions.
