Are Movies getting longer?
Google Slides
Time: 45-90 minutes
Give the diagnostic assessment located on the lesson page.
Have students read this article.
Start a discussion on what they think about this? Have they seen movies getting longer? How can we determine if they are getting longer? What do we need to know?
Brainstorm together a way to figure this out.
The steps should be
Find data about movies over the years.
Determine the average run time.
Compare over the years.
This is a large amount of data, but looking at a sample. It is good to look at a sample of movies for each year and find the average for that. A discussion of Big Data would be good here. How there are large data sets that we can not use regular spreadsheets to measure.
This Git Hub has the file for movie data of over 6000 movies since 1980. To pull for yourself:
Click on movies.csv
Click download
If it opens in the web browser
right-click save as
Save data
Import data into google sheets
Open a new datasheet
Choose import
Discuss the google sheet and explain rows, columns, and formulas if needed based on diagnostic. Ask for suggestions on how to find the averages. This video explains the way to put averages on a new sheet as well as an easy way to copy data.
Have students plot the data by interesting a chart (Video for reference)
Think-Pair-Share the results. Can they answer the question? Do they have other questions?
Discuss the results as a whole group. My spreadsheet did not show a difference. Below is the graph
