I like Ecobee alot, however they do have some privacy issues which was solved with a little very easy modification. Removing the microphones and unplugging the speaker.

I ask that you do not try this at home if you don't know what your doing, and if you mess something up, I'm not paying for it. The hardest part is putting back together. Everything has a very presence placement, but only took maybe 10 min from start to finish.
There are two microphones on the Ecobee 4 as you can see.
First thing to do is remove the four screws on the back. The two pieces come right apart no problems. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE SCREWS ARE LOOSE AND CAN BE EASY TO LOSE.
Unplug or cut the microphone connects. They are the thin wires. This picture was taken after I had done this, like 3 months ago.
This is the speaker, follow the wires and unplug from circuit board.
