Tangible notes and assessments are vital to students with hearing impairments and allows them to follow along and listen to the important parts. This low tech tool can be hand written or on the computer and delivered, and can also include the use of a more high tech tool such as a Smart Pen (NASDSE, 2018).

Assistive listening systems are HATS (hearing assistive technology systems), that can enhance a students ability to hear. There are a variety of devices available and have specific targets to their use . When selected correctly, this provides students with an effective listening device that needs to be supported by the environment created in the classroom (ASHA, 2022).

Copies of notes and presentations students to organize, follow lessons and build understanding, and individual to students needs and accommodations. They offer alternatives for auditory information, clarify information and promote understanding. This guides the learning process and optimizes the students learning process (NDF, 2019).

Closed captioning, adding closed captioning to videos, allows students to make connections between text and audio. Assistive technology tools like CART provide words displayed on a screen to support viewers in following dialogue, making it easier to understand by transcribing and translating spoken word. This is similar to closed captioning and can be presented on a handheld device on up to a large screen or streamed which is a tool that can be crucial to creating an inclusive environment (HLAA, 2022).

Kurzweil is a program that supports learners through TTS (text-to-speech) software that was designed to help students that struggle with literacy, but with the wide range of features, there are several benefits to using this hi tech tool. The features include support of different languages, a talking spell-check, picture dictionary graphics, text magnification and tools for assessment, essay writing, and note-taking amongst others (Neese, 2022).

Closed Captioning can improve and optimize teaching and learning for all students in the classroom. It is intentional, motivating, flexible and customizable. This provides multiple forms of representation of the material and supports multisensory teaching (NDF, 2019).

Kurzweil was designed to reach a wide spectrum of students and support them in making learning more accessible. This addresses the three principles of UDL, why, what and how, through being purposeful and engaging, customizable, and easily integrated (Kurzweil Education, 2022).
