Logistics & Information

ARRIVE EARLY! Getting onto base is always 10x more complicated than you anticipate! We recommend taking the shuttle (ample parking and door-to-door service) or using a ride share app!

Directions: For SSC Pacific Badge and Pass Offices here is a Printable PDF, and for GPS navigation search for 300 Electron Dr, San Diego, CA 92106.

All visitors should use the gate on Electron Drive for all in-out access to the base. People with SPAWAR picture badges should use Mill St. Gate before 8:00 am like you would normally do.

Parking is extremely limited. Please carpool, rideshare, or take the shuttle to the greatest extent possible!

Parking at SSC PAC: Visitors are asked to park in the visitor lot indicated on the map, just to the left inside the Electron Drive gate. If that lot is full, you can park in any other spot that is not marked as reserved. If the whole lot is full, you can look for parking in the Third Fleet complex (only if you have a CAC card), on Electron Drive directly across Catalina Blvd, then walk back over. (If you are walking onto our base, use the pedestrian gate in the badging office courtyard, don't walk in on the road.)

*** Shuttle Service: Parking is limited on base and commuting onto base can be slow in the mornings. As such we will be hiring buses to take people to and from base from a single venue three times in the morning and three times in the afternoon (schedule is here). The bus will pick up near Homewood Suites by Hilton San Diego Airport-Liberty Station, 2576 Laning Rd, San Diego, CA 92106 at the USS RECRUIT (old Naval Training Center training ship located on land) which is right next door, you can't miss it. You can park at that location and ride the bus into base. See Shuttle page for more information.

*** Taxi/ Ride Share: If you are taking a taxi/ Uber/ Lyft you can be picked up and dropped off in the badging office parking lot at 300 Electron Dr, San Diego, CA 92106, or in the Navy Federal Credit Union parking lot across Catalina Blvd.

SSC PAC employees attending TEAR 3M: are asked to please park in the Barracks area, and walk to Topside through the pedestrian gate near building A4. Make sure you know your CAC PIN. We would appreciate if NHRC/C3F employees park at your usual site and walk over.

Arrival and Badge Pickup

Shuttle Riders will be checked in at the USS Recruit before boarding shuttle, and then badged on base.

If parking at SSC PAC:

A table will be set up on Wednesday morning with your badges in the visitor parking lot just inside the Electron Drive gate. Drive south on Catalina Blvd., turn left onto Electron Drive, go through the gate, then make an immediate left into the parking lot. This table will be set up only on Wednesday, Feb. 20, from 7:00 am to 8:15 am.

If you arrive later than 8:15 am on Wednesday, you can get your badge from the badging office. Turn right into the badging office parking lot before you go through the gate. Once you have your badge, you can drive through the gate and parking in the visitor parking lot. Signs will be posted to tell you which direction to go based on the time of day.

All visitors must show government ID (e.g., driver's license or passport or CAC/military ID) to pick up your badge and get through the gate.

If you do not have a CAC or similar ID, and submitted a Base Access Form, then you will be given a paper pass along with your badge. That pass is only good for one day, and you will need to pick up a new pass before you arrive the next day. We will try to hand those passes out at lunchtime or in the afternoon, so please pay attention to announcements about that. If you don't get your pass before you arrive the next day, you can stop in the badging office to get it before you come through the gate.

Business Rules

Unless otherwise noted, the workshop is held at the UNCLASSIFIED level, and all information presented should be cleared for public release. Please keep all conversation at this level when you are in the auditorium, hallways, outdoors, or in any other workshop spaces. If you would like to hold a sidebar discussion, ask one of the workshop organizers to help you find a room.

Laptops and cell phones are allowed on base. WIFI is available for your devices. THERE IS NO PHOTOGRAPHY.

It is inevitable that someone's paperwork will be fouled up. If that happens, you may be issued a red badge, which will require you to be escorted by an SSC PAC employee at all times while you are on base. Please accept our apologies in advance. We will be sure to find you an escort, and we will ask you to not wander off on your own. If you have a white or yellow badge you do not require an escort.

Public areas reserved for the TEAR 3M are the auditorium and the hallway leading to it, the front lobby, and the 4th floor veranda. Please be respectful of the SSC Pacific employees who are not participating in the workshop, and do not loiter or talk loudly in other areas where people are working.

Dress Code

SSC Pacific does not have a consistent dress code, by rule or by custom. Our colleagues are often seen in shorts and flip flops, or formal business attire. A happy medium is "business casual" (e.g., khakis or jeans and a polo shirt), or however you might dress to attend an academic conference.

Our location on the Point Loma peninsula means it's usually colder than in other parts of San Diego. Expect high temperatures between 60-75F, and as cold as 40F overnight and in the early mornings. February is our rainy season.

Please note: the auditorium is usually on the chilly side so for those who often get cold please bring a sweater.

Morning and Evening Colors

Naval Base Point Loma observes morning and evening colors. This includes the playing of the "National Anthem" at 8:00am and "Retreat" at sunset. Both actions will be proceeded by the playing of "attention to colors" five minutes prior and a carry on signal at the completion of the playing of the "National Anthem" or "Taps."

OUTSIDE of a building: If you are outside of a building during the playing of the "National Anthem" or "Retreat", please stop and face in the direction of the American flag and/or the source of the music until the music stops and you hear the carry on signal. If you are driving in your car, you should stop when it is safe to do so, and then proceed after the carry on signal is given. Whether you are on foot or in your car, please ensure you are in a safe spot before stopping.

You are not required to stop when you hear the "Call to Colors." Only stop during the playing of the "National Anthem" or "Retreat." Stay stopped until the "Carry On" signal is given. If you are outside the gate waiting to get on to the base, please understand that the guards will also be honoring colors.

INSIDE of a building: If you are inside a building during these events, there are no actions you are required to take.

Wifi and Amenities

There is conference internet wifi on site. We will provide the conference password on the day of.

Vending machines are located in the main hallway around the corner from the auditorium. There are additional vending machines in the stairwell on the first and second floors.

Several drinking fountains can be found along the main hallway. Some of them have hot water spigots. Last I checked, the hot water in the fountain nearest the auditorium is broken, but it works in the next fountain down near the 4th wing. A water fountain that can accommodate tall water bottles is located near the 5th wing. There is an ice machine in the soda fountain in the cafeteria on the 4th floor.

There is a Navy Federal Credit Union ATM located at the south end of the main hallway, past the vending machines.
