Last year, we were a rookie FLL team! We used a custom robot that was a lot smaller and used the mini SPIKE Prime wheels. We also used block coding, which had many bugs and wasn't very precise. Our robot was unstable and our attachments were inefficient. All this limited us to a max score of only 140/620 points. Although, instead of taking this as discouragement, we took it as a lesson.
We had previously set goals for this year based off of last year's problems.
Learn Python and code with it for better precision and understanding.
Use a new, faster, more versatile robot, possibly one of the SPIKE Prime robots.
Organize code and information better, make sure to save everything.
First, our team collectively completed a Python course on Khan Academy and watched many videos on how to integrate Python into SPIKE Prime. Secondly, after deliberating and viewing pros and cons, we settled on 2 possible robot designs, the Droid Bot E, and the Advanced Driving Base. Through testing, we determined that the Advanced Driving Base would be best suited for our needs. Finally, we created a shared drive that would store all our code and documents, ensuring that nothing was lost.
We reviewed and iterated upon our mission strategy many, many times. Eventually, we found one that worked best for us. Run 1- Start on red side and complete 2/3 parts of mission 1, all of mission 3 and mission 2. Run 2- Complete missions 12 & 11. Run 3- Start on blue side and complete missions 8,6,7, and 5. Run 4- Complete missions 9 & 10. Run 5- complete mission 13. Run 6- Start on red side and pull brush out of mission 1.
ROBOT GAME ATTACHMENTS
Toothbrush- a unique attachment to complete mission 1 and mission 5, has 2 versions.
Extended Arm- A modified version of the SPIKE Prime lifting arm, completes 1 part of mission 2, the whole of mission 3, and the sand pull in mission 12.
Liftus Maximus 2.0- An innovative, iterated version of Extended Arm that completes 2 parts of mission 2 simultaneously.
Bulldozer- A slightly modified version of the SPIKE Prime bulldozer, good for missions that require lots of force, used to complete mission 8.
Wacker- A unique attachment to complete mission 7, Heavy Lifting.
Gear attachment- An innovative attachment to complete mission 11 very efficiently. Turns mission gears directly instead of repeatedly hitting the post.
Captain Hook 2.0- A uniquely iterated version of Captain Hook, an older attachment used for missions 9 and 10, completing Tipping the Scale and Raising the Roof simultaneously.
Lifter- A simplified version of the SPIKE Prime lifting arm that completes mission 13.
