Background
Dr. Darcy Merriwood was inspired since an early age with mythical creatures. Having two parents who were educators at the time, they pushed Darcy to study with academia, but her true passions didn't lie in the books, but rather in exploration. She was inspired by various Ice Ages throughout history and what secrets to earth's past may lie deep within ice caps at our magnetic poles. Nevertheless, despite her desire for adventure, Darcy went on to Cambridge University to study archeology first, gaining her PhD in archeology. Eventually in 1899, Darcy saved up enough money to go on an excursion to the Antarctic. During this journey, she met Captain Mary Oceaneer, who used her knowledge of the sea and offered Dr. Merriwood one of her vessels docked at port in the southern most tip of Peru, in order to take her on the Antarctic plunge.
Traveling deep into the Antarctic, Dr. Merriwood soon uncovered more than she had anticipated. Deep beneath the Antarctic surface was a treasure trove of unique creatures, some real, but others only told of in fables that now to Dr. Merriwood have become reality.
Placement
This attraction, Voyage of the Sunrise Moon, will be part of Animal Kingdom's largest expansion project since Pandora in 2017, opening up an entire new land behind Asia and Kali River Rapids. This land will be entitled Antartica, following suit with Asia and Africa continents denoted previously in the park. While on the surface, Antartica may not have much to offer in terms of animal encounters, in particular in the Floridian heat, the major draw of Antartica will me taking a queue from the ancient and mythical aspect of Disney's Animal Kingdom. With the demolition of Dinoland U.S.A. to make room for an Indiana Jones expansion, the ancient aspect of animals at DAK will be needed a draw, and Antartica will hopefully be one of the main ways of re-establishing that aspect of the park.
Ride
The entrance will be an abandoned whaling station which incorporates some of Animal Kingdom's messaging of conservation and cherishing all creatures. The abandoned whaling town is used as the jumping off point as members of SEA back in the early 1900s began to use it as a tourist destination after Dr. Merriwood's adventure.
Guests walk up to Voyage of the Sunrise Moon and are greeted by an elegant archway that they walk under in order to get to the queue of the attraction. Meandering through the queue guests catch a glimpse of Dr. Merriwood on her adventures painting images of what she saw at sea and within the depths. As the years have gone on, queue begins to populate with images taken from tourists of other creatures that they have seen on their adventures.
As you approach the boat dock, you board the Sunrise Moon boat which seats 16 guests (4 rows of 4 guests) and takes off on your adventure into the Antarctic. This attraction is completely indoors in order to simulate the antarctic weather and environment that you would experience on your journey.
The boats then leave the station and the first sea creature you come in contact with is Promachocrinus fragarius also known as the Antarctic strawberry feather star, this tiny organism sticks out its tentacles and then populates in the darkness of an antarctic ice mountain as your boat then proceeds inside the mountain.
Inside the mountain you meet other extraordinary creatures-moss animals such as Melicerita obliqua, bulb-eyed fish, and other fish and plankton of various sizes.
Following the 4-minute and 20 second boat ride, they are allowed to disembark.
