We are FRC Team 3038, I.C.E. Robotics! We are a FIRST Robotics Competition team located in Minnesota. I.C.E. stands for Inter-District Computers and Engineering. which comes from our team being comprised of two schools, Chisago Lakes High School and North Branch Area High School. We were established in 2009 and we competed in the Minnesota North Star Regional. Since then, we have competed in the Minnesota 10,000 Lakes Regional. We qualified for the World Championship in 2010 and 2018 and we qualified for the MSHSL Championship in 2013, 2014, and 2018.
Our goal is to expose students to high quality STEM education and help them explore potential careers that they can pursue after high school. We build students first and robots second.

Chisago Lakes High School hosts most of our meetings.
During the first week of our Build Season, we start by brainstorming as a whole team. For the first few days, we decide what will be a priority to focus on and decide on two main objectives to accomplish during a match. Then, we break off into smaller groups and come up with some designs. By the end of the first week, we vote on the designs and choose some to prototype.
As we get into weeks 2 and 3, work is done to create both physical prototypes and in CAD. These prototypes will allow us to learn what ideas work well and which ideas need modifications. Once we've proven the prototype can function independently, we add it to a prototype robot to see how it will interact as a system. Usually the prototype robot is constructed out of wood and scrap metal that otherwise would go to waste.
Around week 4, we have the majority of the prototype robot complete, we begin working on our competition robot. We used what we learned by creating prototypes and working on the prototype robot to make improvements to the final design. We take care to make sure that every piece is cut to the correct length, every hole is drilled properly, and all of the wires are routed neatly. This ensures that we will be able to create a reliable robot that performs the best that it can.
We hold an Open House at the end of our Build Season to show off our robot to members of our community. We invite parents, teachers, and sponsors to see the result of our hard work. We give tours around our shop, have robot demonstrations, and give a presentation to let them know what we've been up to.
After our Open House, we hold job specific meetings until our regional competition. These include drive practice, programming, and preparing for competition.
Our regional competition is typically held in late-March to early-April. We compete in the 10,000 Lakes Regional which is usually located in Williams Arena at the University of Minnesota. If we perform well, we can qualify for the World Championship, which is in mid-April in Houston, TX, or the Minnesota State High School League Championship which in in early-May in Minneapolis, MN.
