At Team PB&J, the build of the ROV is the second most important thing (Behind a good sandwich). Last year our ROV did not compete well, but instead of sulking we got right to work on why it didn't compete well. For starters it was flat so it would tip constantly, also the motors and the weight were at the back so when it wasn't tipping it would do loop de loops.
Since our team wasn't performing at an air show, we decided to fix our ROV, so it didn't do loops and barrel rolls. So, to fix that problem we added another layer of PVC, so it wasn't flat, and we moved the center of mass forward by moving the vertical motor to the middle of the ROV. We also added a PVC pipe sticking out to be used as a hook to complete the mission course.
Right away we started designing our next ROV, as you see to the right it looks extremely cool, but it was made on an axis so at any inconvenience it would bend so we scraped that ROV. Though some of our team has plans to rebuild it and only focus on speed.
Before we started building the next prototype, we had to figure out what we wanted to exceed at, and we decided to pick the Mission course.
At every Seaperch competition there is two thing you compete at: The Mission course and the Hoops course.
First we're are going to talk about the Hoops course, the Hoops course consists of five hula hoop all with different orientations that the Pilot has to navigate there ROV through. The fastest time on this course would win, last year we got a time of 2:54.28, which ranked us 57th we deiced we would need to do better.
So, we trained. We practiced and practiced until we could consistently get 40 second every time, Now saying all this I bet you would like to know what our time was for our Reginal competition. 2:08.57 it wasn't good, but we tried our best and came away with 5th at Reginals. Our other time you may ask, it was a DNF, we got tangled up in out own cord. Still, we will be practicing as much as we can before the National competition.
The Mission course is a lot more complicated than the Hoops course, if you want the full rule click here. With that being said the basis of it is score as many points as possible by doing the most thing and once you get max points it then goes to time.
So, you may be asking "how do I win the Mission course" well there is no one more qualified than me to tell you, I was the driver for the Mission course, and let me just say we got first in scoring 75/100 points. How did Team PB&J get first well, one key word, Maneuverability.
Maneuverability is the most important thing if you want to be competitive at the Mission course. Most other teams focus on Speed or stability, but those aren't the key to winning, unlike previous Mission course put on by Seaperch this one isn't fully open. It has an "elevator" which takes up half of the second platform.
So, if you're not maneuverable enough then you won't be able to get all 100 point which is the main goal. Even though our bot may not look that maneuverable trust me when I say, "it is".
