Teaching students using remote video calling - information for patients

This page will help you to understand how we use group video call to teach students.

Why are we using group video calls for teaching?

In the past, students would go to the GP surgery to meet patients and learn about healthcare. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we have been limited by social distancing rules. We are starting to use video calling technology to enable students from Barts and The London School of Medicine and dentistry to learn about General Practice from patients.

What equipment will I need how can I prepare

You will need a phone/computer with video and voice calling features to connect to the internet. Using wifi and a computer/laptop is better but not essential. Your GP will send you a link which you can use to join the group video call.

What will happen during the call and who will be on the video call?

During the call, you will be joined by your GP and students from Barts and The London School of Medicine and dentistry. We will always let you know who will on the group video call. The students and GP will talk to you and learn about your health. The duration and time of the call will vary and your GP tutor will inform you about the exact details.

How will we obtain consent from you

We will always discuss what the teaching involves, who will attend and what will happen before the video call with students. This will be an opportunity for you to go through any questions you may have with your GP. We will send you a text message to confirm that you are happy to take part and this will be stored in your health record.

Will this be confidential and how will you use my information?

Yes. All our students are trained to maintain confidentiality about a patients information. All information discussed will only be used for teaching the students. The students and GP may discuss your case before and/or after the video call to learn and develop their knowledge and skills. Only information that is relevant to the teaching will be used. The students may make notes about what they have learnt and this will always be anonymised so you cannot be identified.

Will you be recording the video call?

No. We are not going to record the video call.

Is the software secure?

Yes. We will be using nationally approved software to enable us to make the video call. We will be using Accurx and NHS Microsoft Teams software.

Can I refuse to take part?

Yes. If you decide to take part in this then you can decline. You can do this before your start or at any time during the call. Let your GP know and they will help you to do this.
