Contributors to this site include history teachers, coaches and teacher educators based in Oakland, California. As students of history ourselves, we recognize that the rise of authoritarian leaders is often accompanied by efforts to re-write and restrict the historical narrative, and that these efforts often extend into the public school classroom. We believe that teachers of history must be unflinching in providing students with access to historical analysis and primary documents that present multiple perspectives, that are evidence-based and grounded in historical scholarship, and that challenge dominant narratives rooted in racism, xenophobia, heteronormativity, and other forms of oppression. This site is intended to be a repository of materials that could be used to challenge those dominant narratives, and as such, it is not intended to provide a "balance" of political views. It is also our hope that the guidelines provided on this site will help teachers make informed decisions about how to maintain a critical approach to studying history, while protecting themselves from professional sanctions or firing.
