Teaching for Justice
A Spotlight On Teaching Asian American Studies Across the Curriculum
A two-day conference intended for K-12 educators and those interested in integrating the principles of Asian American Studies into their professional work.
"You cannot change any society unless you take responsibility for it, unless you see yourself as belonging to it and responsible for changing it."

The racial reckoning sweeping the nation, COVID-19-related xenophobia and violence aimed at Asian American and Pacific Islander communities, and the disproportionate impact of the pandemic on BIPOC communities have accelerated the urgency and necessity of ethnic studies in schools. For social justice to be integrated and sustained in public education, we must build local partnerships that empower and prepare teachers to implement Asian American Studies in the classroom. After nearly a year of conversations and collaborations between K-12 educators in Orange County, faculty and staff at UC Irvine, and education experts across California, we formally invite you to be in community with us over the course of a two-day conference for K-12 educators and all stakeholders interested in establishing, strengthening, and expanding Asian American classroom instruction.
The following are guiding conference questions for consideration:
What does teaching Asian American studies look like in practice?
Who and what community will support my work in this area?
What resources (curricular, pedagogical) are available to me as I leave this conference?
An important outcome of the conference is the dissemination of research and pedagogical resources that teachers can directly implement. This includes sections of the UCLA Asian American Center’s AAPI Digital Textbook project currently under development.
