Spirit week is my favorite week of the year! The last few years I have tried my best to "math-ify" each spirit day - this "Neon Day" is one of my faves!
My name is Lindsay Polarek and I am a high school math teacher in central Illinois. I've been teaching for fifteen years - all at the same school! During my tenure, I have taught a variety of math courses including three different Geometry courses, three Algebra 2 courses, Precalculus with Trigonometry, and I even did push-in support for Algebra 1 one year.
In 2015, as my school was experiencing a change in the number and type of ELL students in our building, we began to offer sheltered ELL courses for core content areas. I jumped at the chance to teach the sheltered ELL Geometry class and haven't looked back since! I absolutely LOVE teaching this course.
I have a wide variety of students in this course, but the majority are refugees from Guatemala who speak Q'anjob'al, a Mayan language, as their first language. I also have other students from Latin America who speak Spanish, and I usually have a student or two from the Congo who speak French. Most years, I usually also end up with a student from Asia or Europe as well.
