Vocabulary Mental Connections
This strategy can be used to emphasize key vocabulary. Students examine new vocabulary words while creating flashcards that can be later used for review. First, students record the new vocabulary word on the front on an index card. Next, students think about a mental connection that will assist them with remembering the word and draw a picture of their connection under the word. The students then turn over the index card and draw a vertical line down the center. On the left side, students should write the heading synonyms and record words with similar meanings to the vocab word on the front on the index card. On the right side, students should write the heading antonyms and record words with opposite meanings to the vocab word on the front of the index card.
