Although the pandemic continues to pose challenges to educators, I wanted to take up something new outside of the classroom, so I started studying Chinese. In this presentation, I first introduce my experiences in studying a new language for the first time since I was in university. Then, I share what I have learned through my Chinese language studies, and how I can apply them in my online English class this fall.
I will first outline some events which led to my decision to study Chinese. Due to time constraints, I have selected to study from NHK radio and television programs but listening to and watching the lessons religiously have not worked for me as I anticipated. In the process, however, I found some similarities between the NHK courses and my online classes. Consequently, I now have some awareness of the frustration that university students may feel with language classes taught online. Based on my experiences and needs as a novice Chinese language learner, I conclude by sharing some ideas to implement in my current asynchronous English course, as well as possible ways to enhance my students’ language learning.
