Tamiko Kondo (University of the Ryukyus)
This presentation tells the story of what I have learnt from my first time online teaching this term. Reflecting on my practices in two subjects, it gives an account of how I have explored the ‘something’ that online classes lack and found ways to help students give meaning to their thoughts through shaping their experiences and sharing their stories. It also describes how I have helped them give further significance to their thoughts and progress to further actions as a form of autonomous learning. This led to my realising what these narratives might indicate. The presentation suggests that exploring a topic in the light of students’ own experiences and the thoughts which have resulted from these experiences, and sharing their stories and developing their thoughts while giving further significance to them, might show the relevance of the class activity and lead to their further autonomous learning. This could make up for the ‘something’ that online classes perhaps lack. The video shows that my reflective teaching and learning journey during this term has led to my practising first-person action research in which I have studied myself as a teacher and a researcher. I would welcome any feedback that might help to guide me in my ongoing enquiries.
