This video presentation focuses on assessing everyday classroom lessons with two interactive and alternative techniques to informally measure learners’ understanding of the course contents. Also, it's a reflection of my teaching after a particular online lesson. Two activities intended for alternative assessment will be demonstrated here through ‘Individual Assessment Cards’ and ‘progressive I-Can Statements’ which help reduce the pressure on teachers and allow the learners to express their opinions after the completion of a lesson/task. These alternative assessments engage learners more effectively in the lessons and are reflections of what they have learned from a particular lesson. The tools can document their learning and concentrate on professional development on the part of teachers. One of the main objectives is to focus on learner strategies which include obtaining, storing, retrieving, and using language in appropriate ways. The other objective is to focus on my journey as a teacher during this covid-19 pandemic where the main challenge lies in engaging learners online throughout a lesson. Among 40 students, the one who insisted me to participate in the presentation would demonstrate how the use of ‘I-can Statements’ helped her to promote confidence in writing and ‘individual assessment cards’ to get instant feedback after a particular lesson. She wanted to share the practical experiences with me in the conference. The tools/strategies actively involve students in the learning process by creating opportunities for them to state what they perceive they are able to do.
