An English Classroom in 2020

As many people online have pointed out, 2020 has so far been like a Jumanji game. With the Australian wildfire, the global spread of Covid-19, and the more recent breakout of racial tensions especially in the United States, among others, the past few months have definitely been unlike any other we have experienced. Consequently, this time has facilitated reflection about myself and my work as a teacher.

In my seven-minute video, I will share my experiences this term. Specifically, I will talk about (1) my evolving perception of online teaching over the course of the semester (i.e., figuring out how to make the virtual classroom look and feel like a live classroom), (2) my re-examination of my role as a language teacher, and (3) my plan on how to effectively move forward, knowing that there will be starts and stops along the way, given this unfamiliar path in teaching brought upon us by this new reality.

To do this, I will adapt some elements of the Pecha Kucha format by adding video inserts (e.g., memes, pictures, other graphics) whenever appropriate. These video inserts will be used to introduce and/or emphasize the points I will be making, and intercut with my own testimonials (shot as a “talking head”) about my reflections and learnings this semester.
