Cornell Note-Taking Method & Extend Activity

Kwik Cornell Notes

The Ted talk that I watched was Unleash Your Super Brain To Learn Faster | Jim Kwik. While taking notes using the Cornell Note-Taking method, I really focused on making things fit the off centered 'I'. This was a distraction. I also noticed that it bothered me if my spacing was off. As you can see by my notes that I needed to readjust the bottom line to accommodate for a final note. When I teach my students to use the Cornell Note-taking method, I think I'll teach them to draw an off-center 'T' and when the are ready for the summary make it an 'I'. I may also encourage them to re-write the notes adding colors or images at home as a way to reinforce the days lesson, or to keep a blank page between notes so that when they are ready to study before an exam they can read and then copy the notes on the next page.

Extend Community

If Information + Emotion = Long Term Memory for my Extend Community activity I tend to start each semester off using my 'One New Thing' activity to support our learning community. At the start of each class I pick 2-4 students to find one new thing they have learned, an interesting thing or something that became clear from today's lesson. The students are told that it cannot be the same as their classmates, so they may need to find more than one. At the end of a lecture, I ask those same students to share their one thing. Then, I ask the entire class if they have any questions about the lesson. Often they respond with a no that one of the student's that have just answered their question. It has helped to build community and self-confidence; some days more students than the ones I selected share their one take-away. Because the students have that emotional connection to the thing that they learned, helped to teach/share it with classmates, I like to believe that information has shifted to their LTM.
