Teach4Future recently wrapped up the Borneo Education for Sustainability Training (BEST) 2023/2024, an initiative that brought together 30 passionate primary school teachers from across Kalimantan. The program aimed to equip these educators with the tools, knowledge, and inspiration to integrate sustainability into their classrooms. Together, we’ve planted the seeds of change, nurturing a new generation of environmental stewards.
Borneo, often referred to as the “lungs of Southeast Asia,” faces immense environmental challenges such as deforestation, biodiversity loss, and water pollution. Through BEST, we sought to empower educators to address these challenges at the grassroots level. Over five intensive days of in-person training in Balikpapan, teachers engaged in immersive sessions led by experts, hands-on activities, and inspiring field trips. These experiences were designed to provide practical strategies for embedding sustainability into their teaching practices.
Participants didn’t just learn - they acted. After completing the training, they returned to their schools to design and implement sustainability projects. With the support of mentors and small grants, these educators transformed their ideas into impactful initiatives, ranging from waste reduction programs to biodiversity conservation efforts. By the end of the program, 14 schools across Kalimantan had established sustainability project centers, integrating environmental education into their curricula and fostering a hands-on learning environment.
The program’s reach extended far beyond the initial participants. Through virtual training sessions, module distribution, and social media outreach, BEST indirectly impacted more than 2,500 individuals. Sustainability modules developed during the program were shared with over 150 additional schools, ensuring the ripple effects of the initiative will continue to spread across the region.
Adding to the program’s success was the invaluable contribution of seven U.S. Government (USG) alumni, whose expertise and dedication enriched the training. These alumni, representing programs like YSEALI and YES, served as speakers, facilitators, and volunteers. Their involvement demonstrated the power of international exchange programs in fostering community-driven solutions to global challenges.
The journey, however, was not without its challenges. Teachers often struggled to balance the demands of their schedules with the time required for project implementation. Schools in rural areas faced logistical hurdles, such as unreliable internet and limited resources. To overcome these obstacles, we adopted flexible approaches, including tailored mentorship, accessible platforms like WhatsApp for sharing modules, and regular check-ins to support and motivate participants.
Reflecting on the program’s achievements, we are reminded of the incredible potential of educators to inspire change. The BEST program has not only equipped teachers with the skills and knowledge to address sustainability but also fostered a strong network of eco-conscious educators committed to driving change in their communities.
As Teach4Future takes a brief hiatus to plan future initiatives, we remain deeply committed to our mission of empowering educators for a sustainable future. We aim to expand our network, develop new resources, and support even more schools in implementing sustainability projects.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the participants, mentors, and supporters who made BEST 2023/2024 possible. Your contributions have created lasting change, and we look forward to continuing this journey together.
