This piece not only depicts the graceful beauty of koi, but reminds us how fish are important to our ecosystem. Through excretion, they recycle the nutrients they take in, providing fertilizer for seagrass and algae. Algae provide half of the planet’s annual oxygen. We don’t often reflect on how nature works. Earth Day reminds us that nature shouldn’t be taken for granted.

I am a Tucson native and love the desert for its special beauty. I am acutely aware of the difference when I go on road trips, watching the environment change through the window of a vehicle. The mountain formations and vegetation are great natural markers for location and make it easy to know where we are. The mountains create some great shapes against the desert sky on a regular day, but during a desert storm the shapes and colors change and meld into different shapes and colors entirely. Sometimes the desert rain can come down so hard it makes the mountains look like they are melting.
Drypoint
4" x 4"
During the pandemic some of my happiest moments have been spent outdoors. I made this small drypoint after walking early one sunny summer day through rolling New England conservation land surrounded by high grass and cornflowers, while songbirds of all kinds chirped all around. Land trusts provide farmers with incentives for preserving their fields for wild animals and future generations. www.bobbiesalthouse.com

This painting, inspired by the petrified forest national park, is an astonished tribute to the beauty of these badlands. They are bare math and physics. When I’m there, with 225 million years visible at once, I feel calm.

I wanted to capture the glory of the desert sunset with bold paint strokes and vivid colors. The sun seems to radiate with heat and chroma, and its brilliance overwhelms the hills in the distant terrain. The foreground saguaro stands up tall and high, its stature silhouetted strongly by the light behind it.
