WILTSHIRE WANDERERS' 50MHZ OUTING

THE 'WILTSHIRE WANDERERS' REPORT ON THEIR ACTIVITY AFTER PARTICIPATION IN THE NE 2012 RSGB 50MHZ CONTEST

01 JUL 2012

Trowbridge & DARC club members David M0GHZ, Pete 2E0NEY and Chris G0HFX as the ‘Wiltshire Wanderers’ took part in the six hour section (6O) of the June 6m Contest from the Mendip Hills. They chose a six hour slot at the start of the contest on the 16th. The intention was to have some fun, to be able to run David’s homebrew GS35B linear without fear of causing any TVI and to enable us to put in a competitive entry and still enjoy working a good amount of DX should any Sporadic E manifest itself.

We decided to go for the first 6 hours of the contest 1400 hrs Z Saturday until 2000 hrs Saturday evening)

When we arrived on site we wondered if we had made the right decision.

A howling South-West force 9 or 10 gale was blowing across the top of the hill and it was doubtful if we could manage to install 2 large 6m beams on two trailer masts and keep them up. It was decided that the bigger beam (7 ele) would be mounted at restricted height and with extra guys for safety.

We were ready on time, all appeared to be working well and it was a great surprise to us that we were greeted by the first of several “sporadic E” openings to South East Europe .

Listening around we were surprised to discover that many of the other G-GW-GM stations were not getting the same quantity of “E” contacts as we were.

Propagation was certainly favouring us.

At the end of our 6 hour period we were really surprised at our amassed score, and we feel confident that we may have pulled of a win in the 6 hour section.
