Since 2004, the Berkeley Particle Cosmology group has partnered with the Summer Math and Science Honors (SMASH) Academy at UC Berkeley, by presenting a three to five week science course for SMASH scholars.
This course -- Topics in Current Science Research (TCSR) -- recruits a multidisciplinary pool of graduate and advanced undergraduate students from science, math, technology and engineering (STEM) fields to work as project leaders.
Each project leader or pair of project leaders guides a small group of SMASH scholars through a hands-on research project intended to expose the students to authentic academic research across STEM fields. The project culminates in a final presentation given by the scholars in front of their peers, project leaders, and a senior scientist.
Are you currently a graduate or advanced undergraduate student at UC Berkeley in STEM? Are you interested in outreach? We are currently in the process of recruiting instructors for this summer's offering. This summer's course will be in-person the first two weeks and then virtual (via Zoom) for the last week. Project leaders may also pair up to team-teach a TCSR project. If you would like more details, email the TCSR coordinator, Rachel Winheld, at winheld@berkeley.edu.
*All project leaders receive the same stipend, regardless of whether they choose to team-teach or not.
