In mid-2015 Saint Cecilia Elementary purchased two Spark Brain Bikes for two reasons: 1) increase student physical fitness, and 2) improve student ability to self-regulate and learn to focus.
In applying for the Google for Education Certified Innovator Program, Saint Cecilia teacher Brennan Caverhill proposed an innovator project that extended the use of these stationary bikes in the classroom (see video below left).
Our moonshot would be that one day these small, solid, silent stationary bikes also add "green-energy" and "smart" functionality, where not only do they charge lithium battery packs with USB ports, but they also send power production, distance, and time data to a connected app for followup student analysis (see vision deck below)!
In the meantime, we are happy to share the current analog Spark Brain Bikes with other schools in the TCDSB, so they can test for themselves their utility in the classroom.
