Introducing Tazumal Salvadoran dance group. We are a dance group made up of family and friends who have come together to share the beauty of our Salvadoran culture - through dance. Based in Brisbane - Australia, our purpose is to celebrate and showcase our Salvadoran culture not just with the community but also for our children.
Salvadoran culture is a blend of indigenous, Spanish, and African influences. Family is highly valued and religion, particularly Catholicism, plays a significant role in daily life and many holidays and traditions are centered around religious observances.
Salvadoran culture has been shaped by a history of political and social upheaval, including a long civil war that ended in 1992. Despite these challenges, the people of El Salvador have maintained a strong sense of community and pride in their culture.
By establishing this dance group we hope to instil in our children the importance of treasuring this piece of their identity. We are honoured to take part in celebrating the rich diversity with the Australian community that we have since been blessed with as citizens of Australia. Our home away from home.
Tazumal - is an archaeological site of Mayan ruins found in the town of Chalchuapa, Santa Ana. It is one of the most important sites in El Salvador. The Maya would hold ceremonies and perform dance rituals at the site to ask for abundant crops and give thanks to mother Earth.
We chose this name to show our connection to our ancestral roots and share the history of El Salvador.
