What is your impression about the instructional design (ID) process?
The Dick and Carey model, surveyed throughout the semester, proves to be an extremely effective method for instructional design. The simplicity and step-by-step instructions provided within the textbook allow educators to easily follow the instructional process to create instructional materials that are engaging and beneficial for the students. The needs assessment allows the instructor to establish what the standards will be for their instruction in order to best curate a curriculum that will aid in the understanding of the material. The instructional analysis serves to let the reader identify the goals of their instruction. By doing so, they are able to once again curate information to meet the needs of their students. The learner and context analysis part of the instructional design method discussed throughout the semester allows the instructor to establish the entry skills and necessary skills for their students to perform well on the end goal- in my case, their end-of-the-year standardized test. The performance objectives hone in on the specific desires of the educator for their students. The assessment instruments let the students know exactly what means will be utilized throughout instruction. The instructional strategies and materials serve to allow the instructor to better cultivate their instruction. By introducing their strategies for teaching, an educator is able to redefine their goals and plans for their instruction. Additionally, this step in the instructional design process is one of the most crucial steps for allowing students to understand what is expected of them throughout the entirety of the course. Finally, the evaluation stages of instructional design serve to allow the educator and students to truly evaluate how the material is presented to test for effectiveness. The formative evaluations let the instructor know which strategies are most beneficial for their students and which ones need to be reimagined. The summative evaluation serves to wrap up the instructional period, as the students work through a standardized and cumulative assessment. This final assessment serves to assess the instructor and the students alike. Ultimately, it is abundantly clear that Dick and Carey's instructional design method has undergone rigorous testing to ensure that the method remains tried-and-true. This seemingly fool-proof method for curriculum curation will absolutely be utilized within my future classroom.
