Mercedes Taylor earned a B.A. in chemistry from Amherst College. She then spent two years as a research chemist at the National Institutes of Health, doing small-molecule synthesis for drug discovery, before pursuing a Ph.D. in chemistry. She got her Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, where studied flexible metal–organic frameworks in the lab of Prof. Jeffrey Long. She then worked as a distinguished fellow at Sandia National Labs, doing materials synthesis for water purification, before joining the UMD faculty. Mercedes loves to read and play basketball. She once rode her bicycle across the U.S. (it took a long time).
