In March of 2024, I had the honor of participating in a design competition hosted by Wander Brewing in Bellingham, WA, to celebrate their 10th anniversary. The competition was centered around designing a label for their Uncommon Common beer, a unique brew that had not been produced since the brewery’s opening. After much anticipation, I was thrilled to be selected as one of the top 4 finalists for the contest. Although I ultimately came in 2nd place, the entire process was an incredibly rewarding experience.
The design I created for the Uncommon Common can was born out of a blend of hand-drawing and sketching, with a focus on capturing the essence of Wander Brewing’s story and the history behind this beer. I spent considerable time researching the company’s values, aesthetic, and the legacy of the beer style to ensure that my design was not only visually appealing but also a meaningful tribute to the brewery’s roots. Storytelling is an essential part of my design process, and I strive to weave narratives into my work so that each piece feels personal and authentic. For me, this is key to creating designs that clients can connect with on a deeper level.
One of the most enjoyable aspects of this project was the freedom to experiment with color and composition through trial and error. I found myself exploring different concepts, playing with bold palettes, and refining the design until it felt just right. The experience of pushing creative boundaries and embracing the iterative nature of design was truly fulfilling. Wander Brewing’s team shared their appreciation for the thought and care I put into the design, particularly my connection to the colors, San Francisco, and the rich history of the Uncommon Common beer. While my design wasn’t selected, I’m grateful for the opportunity to showcase my work and for the feedback that inspires me to continue evolving as a designer.
