Fundraising picnics were held from 1921-1971 to raise funds to maintain the property. These picnics took place in the wooded areas west of the Pittsburg Store, across from the Maple Grove School--owned first by Sherman Crowl and then Horace "Jigs" Tompkins. The picnics then moved to another area east of the school, on the same sided of the road, owned by Eldon "Jake" Carter. They served as a social function for the area, with a fried chicken meal including home-grown tomatoes, green beans, corn, and homemade pies serving as the main attraction. A bingo stand, cake walk, pony rides, games, and country music provided entertainment.
