I begin my walk toward town with only a few hours of daylight left. I feel like I can hitch a ride with someone eventually. I just want to get home. I follow the road to make sure I don’t get lost. I walk into the night, and as I crest a hill, I pause. Something is wrong.
I look over the city I know is there, yet I see nothing. Not one light is on. A shiver goes down my spine at what this could mean. The only light I could see for miles was the moon high above me. It’s not quite yet a full moon, but it’s close. The lack of light from the city makes me anxious. It seems... dead. This causes me to pick up my pace a bit.
I walked for hours before the exhaustion truly set in. I remember a gas station near this area; I have seen it on this road plenty of times and even stopped there a few times. I walk for another mile before I see it. The place is a pale blue; the paint has faded over the years. The limited light makes the place seem even more faded. It’s desolate. The lights are off, and there are abandoned cars in the lot.
I walk up to the door and see almost nothing. I go to put my hand on the glass, but my hand goes through the door. I lean forward to try to see inside better and make out a mess of items littered all over the floor. I push the door, and it swings open easily. I creep in and check the gas station before feeling confident that it was truly abandoned. There are only three rooms to check, the main area, the bathroom, and the office. There’s nobody in these spaces; the only thing that greets me is weird items covering the floor.

As I walk about, I hear noises from the items I’m stepping on. It’s a good thing I have my hiking boots on. I thank them as I hear a combination of crunches, cracks, and pops.
I can smell rust and a mixture of foods. The combination of the mess and the smells makes me want to leave, but I decide to stay.
This is still shelter, even if it’s not what I wanted. I want to stay here instead of in my tent. Seeing the city with no lights doesn't sit right with me. Something is wrong, and I don't know what it is. Maybe the gas station will offer some protection from whatever is out there; at least, that is what I have been telling myself. I situate my black sleeping bag behind the counter and doze off.
I wake up well into the mid-afternoon. With the sun out, I could actually see inside the gas station. One of the isles had been knocked over completely, and items were thrown everywhere. The glass on the refrigerator doors and the main doors was busted. I look at the bottom of my shoes and notice pieces of glass embedded within them. I pick out the biggest ones as carefully as possible. I don’t want any shards to go through the bottom of my boots. I groan in annoyance. I probably sit there for half an hour trying to pick glass out of my shoes. Once I'm satisfied that I won't get stabbed in my feet, I turn my attention to the food that’s covering the floor.

I open my bag and look at my dwindling food. I only have a pop-tart and a protein bar, and I wasn’t prepared to be here this long. I grab some Cliff bars that haven’t been smashed by my boots and a few bags of chips that are decent. There are only a few bottles of water that I can find, and I pack those too. I’m careful to walk around the glass now that I can see it.
I think about the lack of lights in town. I could try to get to town faster, the woods aren’t that big, but I could still get lost. I could stay on the road, but that would take longer. I don't know what's happening, and I just want to find somebody. I should…
