My concentration is based on personal religious beliefs that connect stones, plants, animals and humans. My beliefs, and by extension my concentration aims to make human beings feel connected to something larger than themselves. Furthermore, I aspire to remind humans to stay humble; after all they are only a few steps away from stones.
Every piece in my concentration has circular aspects to them that symbolizes the cyclic nature of my beliefs.
The metamorphosis from stones to plants to animals to humans is explored through color scheme and materials. Stones begin as black and white and incorporate minerals and rocks. We transition into flora by flourishing and including seeds. The predominant colors illustrating plants are yellow and green, and plant based materials are introduced. We ease into fauna by combining plants and animals. Animals have a color scheme of blue and purple; people are portrayed in red and orange.
Human ability to create art and music is what sets us apart from the rest of the natural world.
These are illustrated on a slate of rock to begin with a firm introduction of rocks. The salt on the bottom sets up for the next piece.
The moon is created using sodium chloride, because common salt is a mineral.
Seeds are as close to stones as plants get, which is why I chose them for my transition piece. The introduction of yellow drives that home.
Embroidered onto plant based cotton, this palm tree represents a transition into plants. Notice the seeds and black accents tying it back to the last piece.
Woodburning is used to honor plants in this piece. The blue background is hinting at whats to come, the blue and green of the animals.
This piece is drawn with henna onto a tusk.
Fingerprints represent human identity; this piece reveals a horse while incorporating a fingerprint to introduce humans
Human ability to create art and music is what sets us apart from the rest of the natural world, which is why this piece is musical.
