I am a member of the Just Mathematics Collective, a group of mathematicians committed to shifting the mathematics community towards anti-(racism/sexism/homophobia/transphobia); anti-militarism; and solidarity with oppressed peoples. We are inspired by the framework of abolition as articulated by Angela Davis, Ruth Wilson Gilmore, Mariame Kaba, and many others. The JMC came together over the Summer of 2020, inspired by the national uprisings against anti-black police violence. Some of us were involved in writing and circulating this open letter:
Open letter to the mathematics community calling for a boycott of police collaborations
At the moment, we are working on several projects/campaigns. Some examples:
Mathematics beyond secrecy and surveillance. By some estimates, the number one employer of mathematicians in the US is the National Security Agency (NSA). Let's imagine a mathematics that isn't held hostage by "intelligence gathering" agencies and other military organizations. Anyone who conceives of themselves as being a part of the, or a, "mathematics community" is welcome to join this campaign by taking one or several of the pledges-- click the link for more information.
JMC solidarity with Palestine: BDS in mathematics . Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) is a worldwide movement for Palestinian liberation, spearheaded and led by Palestinian civil society. It financially targets multinational corporations and institutions affiliated with the Israeli state who profit from and uphold apartheid. Israeli universities and academic institutions-- through the development of surveillance and weapons technology and the production of intellectual frameworks meant to justify ethnic cleansing and erasure (see for example this report - very accessible and detailed) -- are a prime example. Considering that Israel bills itself as a hub for cutting edge science and technology, it is especially important for mathematicians to think seriously about where they stand. We welcome all mathematicians to join us in this campaign by pledging to adhere to the tenets of the academic boycott-- click the link above for more information.
