TAPISH Foundation is an organisation founded by the transgender community based out of Indore city in Madhya Pradesh. Officially launched on 28th April 2022, it is the first community based organization(CBO) in which all members are transgender men and Transgender women.
We are a registered organization under Section 8 of the 201 Companies Act with tax redemption certificates of 12A and 80G. We started working for the community in 2020. We work on rights, equality, education, employment and mental health, conducting sensitization workshops, documentation and bringing focus to mainstream society. TAPISH Foundation is the first organization in which all the members of the organization are from the transgender community.
The organization works on advocating for the community in various government and non-government spaces, together with doctors and lawyers to bring changes in systemic discourse. Additionally, working on ration distribution and also conducting sensitization programs in schools and colleges about gender variance.
The pandemic has had a severe impact on the transgender community, as their primary sources of income are often labor-intensive jobs that involve interacting with the public. As a result, many transgender individuals lost their jobs due to the pandemic.
In response to this crisis, we stepped in and distributed 100 ration kits to needy transgender people in Indore and Ujjain cities during the pandemic lockdown.
During the pandemic and resulting lockdown, there was a shortage of access to hormones that are essential for the transgender community's hormone therapy. Recognizing the critical need for these medications, we distributed hormones to 40 trans men, carefully verifying their respective prescriptions from their doctors. Our efforts helped ensure that those in need could continue their hormone therapy, despite the challenges posed by the pandemic.
Through our conversations with the community, we realized there's a significant gap in sensitization among hospitals and clinics regarding transgender issues. To address this issue, we have been advocating for gender reassignment surgery, general health check-ups, mental health support, and trans affirmative care for transgender individuals in hospitals and clinics. Our advocacy efforts have been successful, and we have already made progress with 10 hospitals. We hope that by increasing awareness and education about transgender issues within healthcare settings, we can help ensure that all members of the community receive the respectful, dignified care they deserve.
We have conducted several sensitization workshops to educate government officials on the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019. Our advocacy efforts have extended to the social justice departments of Indore, Ujjain, Jhabua, Burhanpur, Mandsaur, Bhopal, and Chindwada. Through these workshops, we have aimed to increase awareness of the rights and needs of the transgender community, which will help increase visibility and promote greater inclusivity in these districts. Our efforts have also involved sensitizing officials about transgender people, and we have encouraged them to issue Transgender Identity cards, in accordance with the Transgender Act 2019.
We approached 3 multinational manufacturing companies - Krishna Garments, Sharda Factory and Annapurna to sensitize them and discuss job opportunities for transgender individuals, in order to promote inclusion in their workplace and improve the economic situation of transgender people. Through this we were able to place 15+ trans people in the above companies as well as TATA Steel, Amazon and HP Petrol Pump.
We spoke to the Principle Secretary - Prateek Hajela at Vallab Bhavan about forming a Trans Welfare Board in Madhya Pradesh as mentioned in the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019. We further sensitized them about the identity of trans men and trans masculine individuals and proposed including two trans men in the Transgender Wellfare Board.
We have advocated for transgender individuals' right to education in schools, colleges, universities, and education departments. Additionally, we have sensitized these institutions about the laws against discrimination of transgender individuals. Our aim is to ensure that not only transgender students but also transgender teachers have the ability to exercise their right to education and employment, respectively.
At Tapish Foundation, we believe that the transgender community should be able to exercise their rights as guaranteed by the Constitution and benefit from various government schemes. However, the absence of appropriate documents, including gender markers, can be a significant hurdle. To address this issue, we have helped 150 transgender individuals update their gender markers in various documents and obtain transgender identity cards.
We have organized various cultural activities, including Human Rights Day, Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR), Transgender Day of Visibility (TDoV), Holi Utsav, and more, with the aim of increasing the visibility and awareness of the transgender community in society. Our hope is that by celebrating these events, we can also help to strengthen the community.
We met with Mr. Shrikant, the Secretary of the Secondary Education Department in Bhopal on May 10, 2022, to advocate for the Transgender Act 2019. As a result of our advocacy efforts, the board is now changing the gender marker on the educational mark sheets of transgender people.
On July 26th, 2022, we met with Mr. Prateek Hajela, Principal Secretary of the State Social Justice Department, to raise awareness about the issues faced by transmen and to advocate for their inclusion in the State Transgender Welfare Board.
